Roman numerals, both ways

javascript · 20 hidden rounds · 250 ms each

Write roman(value), which converts in both directions.

Given an integer from 1 to 3999, return its Roman numeral in standard form, uppercase, using the subtractive pairs IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM.

Given a string, return the integer it stands for, but only when the string is exactly the standard form of that integer: uppercase, no more than three of I, X, C or M in a row, V, L and D at most once, subtraction only through the six pairs above.

Return null for everything else: numbers outside 1 to 3999 or not integers, strings that are not standard numerals (IIII, IC, VV, xiv, the empty string, 12), and values of any other type.

Signature

function roman(value)

Public examples

  • roman(3) gives "III"
  • roman("LVIII") gives 58
  • roman("IIV") gives null
